Newly Qualified – What Comes Next After Passing the Test

Passing test day feels like the finish line, and in a lot of ways it is — no more test nerves, no more L-plates, no more booking lessons around someone else’s diary. But there’s a stretch right after that nobody really prepares you for, either as the new driver or as the parent who’s spent months in the passenger seat. Insurance needs sorting properly for the first time. The car needs an MOT and a service history that’s now someone else’s job to track, not yours. Breakdown cover, running costs, all the practical admin of owning and driving a car independently — it tends to land all at once, usually within the first few weeks of holding a full licence.

This section is for that stretch. It’s written for parents who’ve supervised right through to test day and want to help their newly qualified driver get the practical side sorted — not for learners who are still working through private practice, which is covered in Learning to Drive.

What’s here so far

More on the way

This section is being built out over the coming weeks — insurance for new drivers, general car maintenance, and the other practical bits that come with running a car independently for the first time. It’ll keep growing as each guide is finished and checked.

The same family, the next stage

If you’ve been following the Learning to Drive guides through private practice and test prep, this isn’t a different site or a different audience — it’s the next chapter for the same family. The car’s the same, most of the questions are the same shape, and the aim here is the same too: practical, checked information so you’re not guessing.
